AC retro to R134a
If you have a R12 system and it
leaks, I strongly recommend switching to R134a.
In addition to the obvious
lower Freon costs, you will be able to replace the seals. Note that it is
illegal to release R12 into the atmosphere. Your local Jiffy lube should be ale
to evacuate the system.
Steps
- have system evacuated of remaining R12
- remove the compressor
- drain all oil from compressor by turning upside down
- remove hoses & pipes and replace O rings with new ones
- add PAG oil to compressor
- reinstall compressor
- connect hoses
- connect R134 hookup connectors
- connect gages
- vacuum system for 30 min~1 hr. depending on the vac pump
- start motor & ac and add 1 lb Freon R134
- monitor gages and wet condenser
- add .5 lb Freon until high side = 180, low side = 60
- Test vent air temp = 35~40 deg
- remove gages
- connect the connection caps- not each side is different size
- test drive the car with AC on
Note I found the the only
difference I found is that the AC didn't run as cool at idle, at all other
conditions it was comparable to R12. But 1/10th the cost.
